Through the Years

In 1920, during the annual Easter Reunion, the Methodist Orphanage Alumni Association was organized. Officers were elected and plans were made to return to the orphanage each year during the Easter weekend. The children were happy to give up their beds to returning alumni because they knew there would be some money under their pillows when the alumni departed.
On the 36th anniversary of the establishment of the Methodist Orphanage (1900), the alumni published its first newsletter. The date was November 29, 1936, the same day that the orphanage opened its doors thirty-six years earlier. The newsletter would be a vehicle to bring the MO Alumni Association in closer alignment with the Methodist Orphanage and bind the alumni together as a group of “brothers and sisters.”
In 1955, the name of the orphanage was officially changed to Methodist Home for Children. The 1955 graduating class was the last class to graduate from the Methodist Orphanage High School.
Even though things changed, the alumni association remained strong and welcomed all alumni to join the association regardless of when they became part of the orphanage family.
It was always the goal of the members of the (now) MO/MHC Alumni Association to give back to the “Home” that had meant so much to them. To help them accomplish this goal the association decided to start an Endowment Fund. This fund would consist of money contributed by the alumni with the interest being given each year to the Methodist Home for Children. The Endowment fund was introduced on March 29, 1975. Through donations from the alumni the fund has grown and today provides significant funds to the Methodist Home for Children to help with the various programs to improve the lives of children and their families in trouble in eastern North Carolina.
Through the years the alumni association has contributed to various projects that have benefited their “Home” in one way or another. The Alumni Association paid to have important documents relating to the Methodist Orphanage/Methodist Home for Children restored so that the history of their “Home” could be preserved. The association has organized fund raising events. Golf tournaments have been a favorite over the years and continue to be. Pancake suppers and fashion shows have been tremendous successes. Today the alumni association continues to look for ways to give back to the “Home” that the alumni loved. The alumni board members ask all alumni to join them in helping to make the lives of children and families in trouble better.
Additionally, in 2017, the alumni association set up a scholarship program to benefit its descendants. Through a generous alumni “brother”, the association now offers scholarships annually to qualified relatives of the alumni. In this way the association also helps its own.
