The Bennie Roland Garner Scholarship of $1,000, is made possible by a gift from Mr. Garner of $25,000, an alumnus of The Methodist Orphanage, who passed away in January of 2016, at the age of 98. He entered the orphanage in 1925, and was a member of the Class of 1939. He and his three brothers served in World War II. Bennie was a US Navy Tail-Gunner from 1942-1945. He made his home in Raleigh NC. Mr. and Mrs. Wade/Mary Holmes of Clayton gave a gift of $ 10,000 toward the scholarship funds.

Scholarship General Information
The BRG Scholarship does not have any specific requirements regarding class rank. Scholarship recipients will be chosen based on the things that set them apart, including but not limited to:
Attention to detail should be paramount when completing the different parts of the application. Be sure to directly answer the essay question in your best writing style. Applicants will not be considered if the application is incomplete and if there is an absence of a transcript or reference(s). Students must submit references from their current high school or current college or the one they attended last if they have taken a break from their education.
Selection Committee: The Bennie Roland Garner Scholarship Committee will consist of the MHC Alumni Board members. A quorum of the Alumni Board Members must be in attendance for the decision-making process to take place unless deemed otherwise in case of emergency that would prevent such a meeting. It would be the responsibility of the President of the Alumni Association to create an alternative way for the voting process to take place.
Granting Scholarships: The Alumni Board members will award a minimum of five scholarships of $1,000. annually until funds run out. The scholarships will be paid directly to the school in one installment after proof of acceptance of registration is received with the address where to send the check. Also, recipients must provide a current photo of self and student ID number. There is a limited number of scholarships available with first consideration given to new applicants.

Deadline: COMPLETED APPLICATIONS, with supporting materials, must be postmarked, emailed, and received no later
than Monday February 26, 2024 to Chairperson, Jean Brown (mailing address is on application). Late applications WILL NOT be considered. Next year 2025 the postmarked date to receive applications will be February 15, 2025. June 15, decision by the MHC Alumni Board who gets the scholarships. And August 1, mail checks $1,000 to schools where students are enrolled.
